Diamonds have been recently discovered in two deposits outside the town of Kurdzhali. The stones look very much like flakes. The deposits are being kept in secret so far... The sensational news have been reported by Prof. Rangel Gyurov, Director of the "Earth and Environment Sciences" in New Bulgarian University. An expedition budgeted by the University and led by Harizan Harizanov, PhD, ran into the findings of the precious stones in the summer.
That part of the Rhodope Mountains are rich in other deposits apart from the latest. In Europe, diamands have been found in Spain and the Czech Republic. So far, the most precious stones found in the eastern Rhodopes used to be the aquamarine, the amethyst and the granate.
