The day was first celebrated in 1998 in Veliko Turnovo. There are 263 municipalities in Bulgaria, organized in 28 regions.

The first Bulgarian municipality was Bourgass, founded Feb.7, 1878, with first mayor - Niko Popov. October 12 this year is the 169th anniversary of his birth.
