You could have a walk in the beautiful Rhodope Mountains and visit the Trigrad area... The "Devil's Throat" Cave (pronunced Peshtera "Diavolskoto Gurlo") is an abyss cave formed in result of the collapse of earth layers. To make the cave accesible for tourists, an artificial tunnel long 150m was dugged into the rock. Going down through the tunnel you will reach an impressive cavern - it is believed to be as large as the Alexander Nevski Cathedral in Sofia. A steep cement staircase, 105 m high, leads from the hall to the natural entrance of the cave.

If you go there in the spring time you will see see one of the highest underground waterfalls in Europe (42 m). If you go in the summer time though, you will not be able to see the waterfall but could definitely hear it.

The temperature inside the cave is more or less constant throughout the year - about 8*C. It is a huge cavern. If you want to see something far more beautiful, you should go to the Yagodina's Cave.

There are lots of legends told about the caves in that region. One of them says it was here that Orpheus went underground to the Kingdom of Hades to save his beloved Euridika. According to a Thracian legend it was here that people threw themselves down the abyss to become immortal. People believed with veneration that it was the entrance to the other world - the way to immortality. To send the evil away, they offered the most beautiful girls as a sacrifice. The local inhabitants are still telling the story that whoever/whatever enters the underground labyrinth never manages to go out.

The cave is serviced by the Silivryak Speleologists' Club. They could also organise boat trips and canoeing. Price: Adults - 4 leva (EUR 2), Children - 2 leva (EUR 1). Working hours: 09.00 h - 17.00 h, seven days a week. Duration: Could take up to half on hour if you take the stairs. Advice: 1. If you are afraid of the dark have in mind that the place is pretty dark, there are lights but it is a huge cavern. 2. If you have troubles climbing up stairs better go out from where you came in - the tunnel.

Address: Rhodope Mountains, the Trigrad Gorge
Phone: +359 3040 220
Directions: The cave is 1,3 km to the North of the village of Trigrad.
