Five-Thousand-Year-Old Coin Discovered

A Thracian coin, 5000 years old, was discovered in Bulgaria. The coin was minted during the rule of Thracian king Sitalkes. The sensational discovery is due to Dimitar Kostov - numismatist and Municipal Councilor in Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second largest city. To his words, the unique and priceless find refutes the theories of Bulgarian and foreign scholars maintaining that the legendary ruler of the Odrysian dynasty did not mint coins.

Kostov showed a photo of the silver coin. To Kostov, the evidence of the millennial age of the coin is its basic characteristics like size, weight, width and asymmetry.

He says that the coin is property of a family living in a village near the town of Parvomay, southern Bulgaria, and, together with other 20 coins, has been handed down from generation to generation. All of the coins date back to the time of the Odrysian dynasty. He believes the market value of the unique Thracian coin varies from 50 000 to 60 000 euro.
