Easter in Bachkovo monastery

Easter in Bachkovo monastery

4/21/2006 12:06:20 PM

Two thousand and six eggs were dyed in the famous kitchen of the Bachkovo monastery in expectance of Easter. The monastery is famous for the fact that it produces the eggs in a small farm of its own. A month before the holiday the monks start collecting them to give them to the worshipers on Easter. According to the local tradition all the eggs are dyed in red and the first one of them is put in front of the miracle-working icon of the Holy Mother kept in the church of the monastery.
This year Boris, the Father Superior of the monastery, has ordered some of the first dyed eggs to be sent to the Patriarchy and to Patriarch Maxim in person.
The rest of them are meant for the believers who will come to the monastery on Easter. Several lambs and sheep are this year's votive offering which is given on the second day of Easter when the public prayer with the miracle-working icon takes place.
The monks from the Bachkovo monastery already prepare for the festive procession with the icon held only once a year - on Easter. Hundreds of Bulgarian and foreign believers take part in the event. It is expected that they will occupy the locality on the eve before the holiday and will spend the night in front of the monastery gates hoping for strong health or miraculous cure. Early in the morning on the next day the people hurry to light a candle, prey for health and kiss the icon of the Holy Mother.
More than 200,000 people visit the monastery every year, statistics show. This year at least 1000 Christians from different parts of the country and abroad are expected to celebrate Easter at the monastery.
"Nobody knows how many worshippers will come but we have to be ready to welcome all of them," Archimandrite Boris, the Father Superior of the monastery, said.
