After declaring the Unification on September 6th, 1885, Bulgaria was expecting resistance from The Ottoman Empire and started gathering its armies at that border (the southeast one). Meanwhile, supported by the Austrian-Hungarian Empire (and partially initiated bi it), the Serbian King Milan unexpectedly declared war to Bulgaria on November 2nd, 1885. The Serbian army fled through our west border, heading in two directions ? Sofia and Vidin simultaneously.

BG army needed several days to move to the west, mainly on feet, and although Serbian army outnumbered the BG one, Bulgarian soldiers managed to enter deep in Serbian territory, as far as the town of Nis, and after the active interference of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, the war was ended. This war has also remained known as ?The Captains? War? (the Captain was the highest rank in the BG Military Commandment at that time).
