Bulgaria commemorates on 16 April 85 years since the heaviest act of terrorism committed on its territory, with 213 people killed and another 500 injured.
The assault was carried out on 16 April 1925, when a group of the Bulgarian Communist Party (BCP) blew up the roof of the St Nedelya Church in the capital Sofia.
This terrorist act occurred during the funeral service of General Konstantin Georgiev, who was killed in another Communist assault on 14 April.
It was pure luck that none of the members of the government got killed in this attack.
Tsar Boris III was not in the church because he was attending another funeral service of the victims in an assassination attempt on his life two days earlier.
April 16th, 1925, the old Sofia cathedral church "Saint King" (now St. Nedelya) was full of people.Georgiev, killed two days earlier. Right when the Metropolitan of Sofia, Stefan, was starting the first words of his speech at 3.20 PM, a blast tore the church. 160 people died in that second, and another 500 were seriously injured.
Bulgaria lost more generals and colonels within that second than it did in altogether four wars...
