Plovdiv is a cosmopolitan city. During the time of its existence here lived different tribal groups, ethnoses and people. They lived together with unanimity and in contradiction at the same time, creating their town and leaving its traces in the chronicle of its history.

People believed her to be the one to decide which of the snakes will go to earth: any snake that bit a human was judged sinful - and condemned to stay out in the cold. Curiosly enough, her day, July 17th is worshipped by young unmarried women. (Any connection to snakes?)

17. The St Cyril and Methodius church Ever since the earliest Bulgarian manuscript books preserved until today, we can trace the tradition to honour the two saint brothers - St Cyril on February 14th and St Methodius on April 6th. The earliest mutual celebration of both saints on May 11 goes back to the 12th century. Later on, people honoured their memory with a church celebration on that date but during the Revival period it turned into a secular celebration of Bulgarian knowledge and culture.  The first such celebration was organized by Naiden Gerov in Plovdiv in 1851.
